This may be the first short story I finished. It was published in a local alternative newspaper (Star Root) back in the mid 90s and made no splash at all, as far as I know.

Ruben’s Luck

Small town life in rural Northern California. Some verisimilitude here mixed into whimsical fantasy. There is a bit of history that goes with this. Someone, somewhere once offered to buy a persistent cold from my mother for a nickle. It seemed to work. So, in effect, this one is for my mother.
